friendly fruits:

a pattern design exploration

This project was exploratory as I hadn’t experimented much with pattern creation previously. It was self assigned, but intended to be a cute design for all ages that promotes healthy eating that is applicable to social media and fabric products.

Project Goal:

Uses:

print media, social media, fabric design

Programs Used:

create a set of friendly fruit characters that can be incorporated into a pattern that is appealing to all ages and promotes a healthy lifestyle

Pen and paper, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign

the sketches

The initial sketches (right) were done in my sketchbook with a colored pencil and an India ink felt tip pen.

Pre- and post digital cleanup

I digitized and cleaned up the sketches in Adobe Photoshop then vectorized the image in Adobe Illustrator, as well as adding some variation to the original work.

making the pattern shape

Once figuring out an ideal shape for a pattern repeat (a stretched hexagon), I added color in Adobe Illustrator and then made a few adjustments of the fruit placement via trial and error (see the slight placement differences between the right and left images!

the final pattern design

The final pattern lends itself well to items such as school supplies and apparel, with potential to expand on the characters for things like social media campaigns on healthy eating or possibly a simple fruit themed clothing and accessory line.
